Taymor’s ‘Tempest’: Stunning, But Can Russell Brand Speak The Bard?
The last time director Julie Taymor tackled Shakespeare on film, the result was the dark and poignant Titus. Now, after a pair of period films (the biopic Frida and Beatles musical Across the Universe) and high-profile work on Broadway (The Lion King and the Spider-Man musical), Taymor returns to Shakespeare with The Tempest.
From the very beginning, the film is undeniably Taymor-made. Unorthodox editing and striking visuals show up early and often, giving the story a modern feel in juxtaposition to the language.
