The Swell Season” have easily established themselves as the quintessential 21st-century folk-rock twosome. Made up of angst-ridden Irish singer/songwriter Glen Hansard and Czech pianist/vocalist Markéta Irglová, the power-duo have been performing together since their rise to prominence in 2007 after starring in the new-age musical, “Once”, which scored them an Academy Award for Best Original Song.

“The Swell Season” will be bringing their heart-wrenching blend of lyric, pain and melody to the world-famous Hollywood Bowl on Sunday July 18th 2010 @ 7PM.

To balance out Hansard and Irglova’s surplus of ‘love gone wrong’ songs is another folk-rock duo, “She and Him”, comprised of  actress  Zooey Deschanel and indie-rock master, Matthew Steven Ward (more commonly known as M.Ward). Newer to the scene than “The Swell Season”, “She and Him’s” musical eye-line is lighter in tone and theme. The pair spent the first year of their working relationship E-mailing tracks back and forth and finding days in between their respective schedules to record in Portland, Oregon. Finally after three years of toiling on the collaborative tracks, “She and Him” released their highly-acclaimed first album, “Volume One” in 2008, followed by “Volume Two” in March 2010.

Rounding out the night of male-female folk duos is “The Bird and the Bee”, the upbeat jazz-influenced electro-pop group comprised of feminine-rocker Inara George (the bird) and mega indie producer/singer/songwriter Greg Kurstin (the bee).

Although The Hollywood Bowl’s up-close and personal Garden & Terrace Seating is sold out, we suggest grabbing seats in one of the less-glamorous sections, popping open a bottle of summer wine and soaking up some of folk rock’s finest.

Lady Gaga (momentarily opting for the creepy-sorcerer-look) received 4 platinum awards for her album “The Fame Monster” during a photocall at O2 World arena in Berlin, Germany. She also picked up her 3 Echo awards (“Best International Female Artist”, “Best Single Of The Year” for her single Poker Face and “Best International Newcomer” as well as a quadruple Platinum award for more than 800,000 sold albums)  after being unable to attend the Echo Awards 2010 back in March.

If an overweight, super-energetic and borderline insane lead singer sounds entertaining – then you’ll love Tim Harrington, the acclaimed lead vocalist of New York City art-punk band, Les Savy Fav.

Known for Harrington’s on-stage antics, as much as the bands overwhelming talent to shred, Les Savy Fav have grown in popularity since their conception in 1995 and, even through a 2-year hiatus in 2005, continue to surprise packed-houses with their abrasive mixture of indie rock and post-punk.

Les Savy Fav will be performing this Sunday May 9th 2010 8:30PM @ the Echoplex in Los Angeles, with We Barbarians and LA Ghost. The show is 18+ and you can purchase tickets for $18 @ TicketWeb. Go and indulge in the madness.

Dying for your very own $1,000 Herve Leger body-hugging sheath? How about that cutting-edge, head-turning $500 Badgley Mischka mini? What minx isn’t? So, you’ll hit up the Barney’s Warehouse Sale bi-annually – and even resort to EBay – because let’s face it, these babies will only be worn once and hidden in the depths of your last season-has-been-closet. But, doesn’t that get tiring, wasteful, and expensive? Minxes, search no further for the perfect steal, your fairy godmother has granted you Rent The Runway.

Rent The Runway, developed by two minxy Harvard graduates by the names of Jennifer Hyman and Jennifer Carter Fleiss, is an online rental service providing designer duds for $50 to $200 for a four-night loan. Sign-up and this season’s dress of your dreams is readily available (carefully delineated by designer or occasion: date night, black-tie affair, white party, dinner party etc.) All you have to do is order 4 days in advance to your event (or same day if you’re in New York), and decide whether you need that second back-up (size or style) for just $25. 4 days after the event, stick it back into their prepaid envelope and drop it in the mail and poof!

(Small print isn’t bad either: dry cleaning is included in the price, but damage insurance costs $5, and in the case of outright destruction of the dress, the renter is responsible for the full retail price.) FYI all dresses come with a custom garment bag and a “fit kit,” which includes double-sided tape, bra strap adjusters and deodorant stain removers.

Yes, this is real. Check Rent The Runway out now.

VOYEUR

L.A. Fashion Week, like the Minx determined to walk in her Mother’s Louboutin’s, wobbled and wooed its way across town to attend Gen Art’s Fashion Week Bash presented by Absolut Berri Açaí at Voyeur on Monday. What better way to end last week’s never-ending fashion party with yet another? A trio of complimentary cocktails flowed, “A Berri Rickey” being the crowd favorite with lime juice, club soda and simple syrup, while DJ Politik and Taryn Manning orchestrated the beats. Fallen angels clad in white feathers glowed and gyrated in cages on stage, prompting the many looking to avoid a retelling of Paradise Lost to get to the patio for a cig and a chat. And to be sure, Minx Society was among the revelry ready, with lace handkerchief and bottle of champ in hand, to bon voyage the little tugboat that was L.A. Fashion Week out to sea. Adieu!

Last Thursday, we spotted a Minx in our midst at Fred Segal! NY-artist du jour Molly Crabapple (yes, we’re in love with the sobriquet) unveiled her debut collection of Dirtee Hollywood graphic tees at the Melrose fashion hub, one among a flurry of L.A. Fashion Week fetes that offered to (literally)  sketch the boundaries of fashion and art.

Crabapple’s Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School, the asylum for all who shun the artsy fartsy,  posted on high six burlesque models frozen throughout the store for guests’ ogling and doodling pleasure, while the petite artist, who may very well be a porcelain doll, signed tees and inked a sizable sketch of her own between mingles.  The molly-fied scenery toasted to corsets and cravats, a nod to Crabapple’s Carollian-inspired work and the Cheshire kinderwhores blotting her cotton canvases.

She did learn to draw in a Parisian bookstore after all, or so the tale goes…And the bare necessities aside, if burlesque queen Dita Von Teese dropped a pasty and picked up a pencil, she’d be Molly Crabapple.

When my date suggested pizza, I hung the little black dress back up and reluctantly slipped back into my skinnies.  However, I was pleasantly surprised when we pulled up to Pizzeria Mozza, a noticeably stylish restaurant met with a bustling line out the door of a myriad of young Angelenos:  suited up professionals and fashion-forward couples.  Immediately, I knew that Pizzeria Mozza is not your average straight-up pizza kitchen.

First thing’s first: don’t miss the wine menu!  Pizzeria Mozza is known for its extensive wine list and feel free to ask your server for a few samples of some of their more rare selections before getting a bottle for the table.  For starters, go for the melt-in-your-mouth crispy goat cheese antipasti ($12) or the eggplant caponata ($8) to share before delving into the sensational pizza selections.

The pizza selection is overwhelming and anything but your usual pepperoni (think wild nettles and funghi misti) – but with prices between $10-$22 and selections fit for foodies, you can afford to take chances.  A favorite is the Squash blossoms, tomato & burrata pizza – a thin-crusted pizza satisfyingly full of the freshest flavors. For an impressible (and might we add, hip) experience, try Pizzeria Mozza. Reservations are a must.

A-list fashionistas filled New York hotspot, The Mark Hotel, last night in celebration of Vanessa Paradis’ new role as the face of Chanel’s new lipstick.  Previously, the French singer/actress/babe/Johnny Depp’s lover was the face of “Coco Chanel” in 1992, then the face of Chanel’s Cambon handbags in 2003. Vanessa’s chose a Chanel shift dress with floral details paired with thigh-high black suede Louboutin boots.  Other minxes in attendance included Kate Bosworth (pictured above in Chanel Spring/Summer 2010 pink multicolored pinafore dress), Rachel Zoe, and Caroline Sieber (Australian-born, London-based super-stylish-stylist pictured above).

 For Her:  Stella McCartney Lingerie

There’s nothing like the sweet-nothing of lingerie as a Valentine’s Day gift—for the pleasure of both parties involved. On February 1, Stella McCartney’s new lingerie line hit stores, consisting of 13 different collections, each with its own whimsy name like Eve Blushing, Iris Sleeping and Sandy Stripping. With a variety of luxe styles, from 50’s inspired bras and mesh briefs to silk georgette gowns—in netural, but sensual tones—McCartney undoubtedly looked to the past in creating the new line.  With some lacy and racy pieces, along with some fun, patterned undies that conserve a little more skin, the words that best describe McCartney’s range of delicate cover-ups are safe and sexy.

For Him:  Denis Colomb Scarf

With the weather still looking glum for Valentine’s Day, a luxurious, hand-woven wrapping fits the occasion perfectly.  French Architect and designer, Denis Colomb, makes incomparable scarves for men and women with his impeccable quality and craftsmanship. Influenced by the cloth-wear of Nepal, with a fall/winter collection titled “Himalaya,” Colomb’s scarves are natural and organic in color, such as Saffron red, Dust violet and Kerala stripes. Colomb’s top priority is authenticity. Each of his pieces is made from the hairs of the goats and camels form the herds of nomadic tribes from the Himalayas region.  Alongisde beauty, Colomb takes pride in the practical: creating products that keep you warm in the cold. Ladies, while perusing the stores and sites for a  scarf for him, don’t think twice about picking up one of Colomb’s cashmere and makula bankets, wraps or shawls for a gift of your own.
