| This Weekend: FYF Fest |

Music / Party |

With the balmy days dwindling, so are your chances to bare flesh publicly while bands play outdoors. For those not burnt out by the recent plague of local festivals, including Sunset Junction, Sunset Strip Festival, or Outside lands, get to Fuck Yeah Fest this weekend for another chance to don your denim cutoffs.
Nestled downtown just beside Chinatown, LA State Historic Park plays host to a plethora of indie outfits on Saturday, including UK dance hybrid scenesters The Rapture as well as !!!, New York’s Panda Bear of Animal Collective, L.A.’s very own overnight phenomenon Local Natives, actor Ryan Gosling’s band Dead Man’s Bones, and a huge collection of local groovers.
Others include Sleep, Unbroken, Man Man, 7Seconds, Thee Oh Sees, The Mountain Goats, Ted Leo + Pharmacists, Delorean, Cold Cave, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Washed Out, Wavves, School of Seven Bells, AA Bondy, The Blow, Best Coast, Davila 666, Titus Andronicus, The Soft Pack, Abe Vigoda, Warpaint, Off!, Vetiver, Ceremony, Big Freedia, Screaming Females, Magic Kids, The Growlers, Lower Dens, Let’s Wrestle, Cults and more.
Now in its seventh year, FYF 2010 will offer three stages to host the 30+ acts booked for the day. To top this big bash off, FYF will offer vegan food, DIY silk-screening, a record swap meet, local comics and ultimately provide the perfect venue to wear vintage wayfarers, stripe or plaid shirts, and various accoutrements of the hipster uniform (not?)

The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel is upping the ante with yet another enhancement to their fabulous hotel, and we have never been more excited to tell you about something!
In addition to the hotel’s launch of their new bar we told you about awhile back, the Spare Room (1920′s game room motif complete with a bowling alley), owners Comedian Jeff Beacher and actor David Arquette have teamed up to give The Roosevelt ‘Beacher’s Madhouse’, a Vaudeville-frenzied blowout taking over a renovated space on the hotel’s lower level.
In a members only style (think La Descarga or Soho House), guests will enter through a hidden passageway (a bookcase, they tell us) into a 2,500-square foot space complete with a tiered glass stage, floor to ceiling chandeliers, go-go girls, burlesque dancers, a giant coffin, live animals, fire-breathers and little people running most of the show (i.e. flying around the room and servin’ up drinks at the ‘midget bar’ – their words, not ours). The date they give us is ‘Fall,’ and shit, we’ve never been so ready for summer to end.

Behold The Saint, a cool, intimate lounge with a solid, polished crowd on the unlikely Fountain and Vine. You may remember it as Vine Bar (or you may not), a seedy, grimy rocker hole where musicians used to cavort. But former Vine Bar owners Johnny Maloney and Logan Fenton yearned for their hipster hangout to be so much more, and thus transformed the space into The Saint, which, according to Fenton, “feels like a New York bar. I hate L.A. bars.”
The star of the show: a gorgeous beveled glass bar covered with lustrous religious candles, topped with massive chandeliers that generate the glow of a halo (the only nod to the bar’s religious name). Towards the back, you can make out a completely blacked out cave-type room filled with velvet tables, shimmery walls, and the DJ booth. Beside, the Geisha House-esque red staircase leads to a low-ceilinged VIP area with a see-through glass bottom (watch out, ladies).
We suggest getting here after 11 with or without a date (or entourage)…don’t be afraid to come by yourself, this is a spot where you can actually meet people!

| First & Hope Brings the Swank. |
By: Erin La Rosa | Jun. 08, 10 |
|
| |
Menu / Party |

First & Hope is the kind of ultra swank hotspot that’s begging you to come and play on a night out. A glitzy “supper club” where the hostess wears a pearl colored gown, live jazz filters through the joint, and a purplish flush from the chrome and LED lights illuminates the tables. This new downtown restaurant, across from the Walt Disney Concert Hall, couples flashy ambiance with proto-Southern tavern food, and it’s working.
Inside you’ll find an L-shaped dining room filled with stylish booths and banquettes, large chandeliers, and a well dressed staff. The fully stocked bar is complemented by pearlescent walls and a curved ceiling. And to add to the glam, Mad Men assistant costume designer, Allison Leach, created the hostess gowns along with the shorter versions worn by the waitresses.
On the edible side, menu offerings are nothing short of tantalizing. Cocktails like the “Blackberry Cobbler” and “Champagne Julep” were crafted by Aidan Demarest, former director of spirits at the Edison. And the Southern comfort food comes straight from Memphis native Shelley Cooper, who was primarily stationed in the South until now. Items like the “BBQ Fried Oysters” and the “Crabmeat Justine Pot Pie,” are easy to share. While the creative entrees, like “Nenaw’s Picnic Basket” which comes with deep-fried buttermilk hen, potato salad and collard greens, and the “Moonshine Meatloaf” will leave you all but torn on what to order.
The only downside is the location, which is a bit tough to find, as it happens to be in a strip mall underneath a towering residential complex. However, it’s an impressive spot and even has a club in the back, called Fedora, where you can sit in on live jazz to round out your posh evening.

| MTV Movie Awards 2010 |

Gossip / Party |

Twi-hards were stoked last night when The Twilight Saga: New Moon won Film of the Year at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards and Kristen Stewart and Rob Pattinson won best female and male performer trophies as well as the best kiss award (after the always awkward Stewart tripped on her way to the stage and attempted an almost-kissing-tease-the-audience skit with Rob).
And, we were stoked last night when we stepped into Katy Perry’s MTV Movie Awards “California Girls” After Party at a Minx Society favorite Las Palmas in Hollywood. Despite the odd appearance made by the cast of Jersey Shore (which, we will admit, gave us a laugh or two), other guests included newly blonde Lindsay Lohan (who stuck to “mocktails” and kept her SCRAM ankle bracelet strategically hidden under her boots), Paris Hilton (who tried to make headlines by arriving with Jersey Shore ‘guido’ Vinny Guadagnino) and Nicky Hilton, Audrina Pattridge, Emma Roberts, and Russell Brand (of course).

| The Hamptons in Hollywood |
By: Erin La Rosa | May. 25, 10 |
|
| |
Party |

Spending a summer in the Hamptons has never been this easy. You can skip the plane ticket, forego the Jitney, and need not worry about finding beachside accommodations. Because the nightlife gurus at SBE (who brought you INDUSTRY, MI-6, and Hyde Lounge) are now unveiling their latest creation, The Colony, which promises a taste of the Hamptons in the heart of Hollywood.
When you see the outside of The Colony it’s hard to believe that it’s located right off of Cahuenga. A large patch of sand and a wood-plank ramp lead to the door, and a massive azure lifeguard stand is fixed at the entrance. Once inside you’ll find a blue-and-white floor that resembles the deck of a boat, a hammock-drenched pool, and cabana-style seating. There’s also an outdoor dance floor that features tables with secret storage under the cushions, a suspended turquoise kayak that doubles as a swing, and walls outfitted to look like waves. If you prefer to spend your time lounging, then head to the seating areas where padded periwinkle dinghies cushioned with seersucker pillows await.
Among the other Hamptons-esque amenities, guests will find a beachy retail kiosk where you can trade your stilettos for a pair of flip-flops, or rent a space to store your blazer for the night. And the theme takes a fun turn with bartenders dressed like lifeguards (think board shorts, bikini tops and whistles) offering up vodka-spiked popsicles and champagne-spiked sushi.
As with any SBE outpost you can expect to find famous DJ’s playing a set of highly singable mainstream tunes, celebrity clientele (Jamie Foxx, Jesse McCartney, & Jeremy Piven partied here on Friday) and a space that aims to please.
The Colony brings you all the excitement of the beach, just with more booze.

| LA EXCHANGE: Art Deco Heaven |
By: Casey Winchell | May. 20, 10 |
|
| |
Party |

Imagine the glitz & glam of the roaring 20’s. Picture the perfect venue to host the party and voila! We give you: Exchange LA.
Located in the former Los Angeles Stock Exchange Building (built in 1929), Exchange LA is the premiere space to host one colossal ritzy party. After a $5 million renovation, the 25,000 square foot spot includes four stories and four bars of Art Deco Heaven. Enter through the 12-foot bronze doors (weighing 1,400 pounds apiece) and you won’t believe your eyes: massive chandeliers, stained glass windows, a 40-foot tall hand-painted ceiling…decadence everywhere.
Here’s the catch, Exchange LA isn’t open to the public. Instead, the space will only hold private events. But, this doesn’t mean you can’t get in on the debauchery! Starting June 4th, a series of nightlife events will be hosted by event producers and promoters (email us at rsvp@minxsociety.com to be put on our party list).

| Las Palmas: Open for Business |

Menu / Party |

The group that brought you h. wood and the tea room is at it again. And this time they’ve revitalized former Hollywood restaurant and nightspot, Las Palmas. With a soft opening on Cinco de Mayo, Las Palmas had its official opening last night.
The transformation brings with it a whole slew of exciting renovations. One of the more unique feature is a mouthwatering outdoor taco stand at the entrance. This will not only greet guests but also serve up hot tacos and a la carte Mexican food until 3 a.m. (Now we know where to head after hours!). While inside you can expect to find vibrant Spanish tiles accenting the dark woods, and brass details contrasting with the richer metal features. The menu will consist of traditional Mexican fare, and the spot itself promises to showcase eclectic DJ’s catering to the exclusive h. wood clientele (Lindsay Lohan was recently spotted here with a new bodyguard).
If you’re looking for a spicy spot, this is our new favorite dig.

| Summer of the Living Dead |
By: Erin La Rosa | May. 11, 10 |
|
| |
Menu / Party |

Nothing quite signals the start of summer in LA like heading to the Hollywood Forever Cemetery for a picnic dinner and a movie. The screening calendar is out, and the cemetery is kicking things off this Saturday, May 15th with the Wizard of Oz.
Going through mid-September and happening most Saturday or Sunday nights, the screenings have been known to sell out to crowds numbering the thousands. And it’s not hard to see why. Guests are able to bring blankets, lawn chairs, full picnic baskets, and wine through the cemetery gates. The spacious lawn offers viewers the chance to catch a flick under the stars and amongst some of Hollywood’s greatest deceased talents (including Cecil B. DeMille, Jayne Mansfield, Rudolph Valentino, and Douglas Fairbanks). The cemetery screenings have expanded their clientele from hard-core film buffs to any and all looking for a uniquely LA experience.
Perhaps one of the better advantages to this is that local restaurants have started to catch on, providing fully prepped picnics to grab on the way. Joan’s on Third offers a wide selection with their summer picnic options, including poached salmon, caprese salad, and shrimp summer rolls for sharing. And on the Westside, Clementine offers three course meals, cheese plates, chocolate samplers, and their homemade marshmallow-topped hot cocoa.
Gates open at 7 p.m. and films start at 8:30 p.m. For the full and current schedule, click here.

| New Bourbon Bar in Silver Lake? Yes please! |
By: Jennifer Donegan | May. 11, 10 |
|
| |
Party |

If only we knew about this a couple of weeks ago when the Kentucky Derby was in full swing over at Churchill Downs we would have been deep into the Juleps hours before the start gate was even loaded. With probably the best Mint Julep this side of the Bluegrass State, the Thirsty Crow aims to please with its signature drink and some pretty fabulous concoctions that all include their main ingredient, Bourbon.
Brought to you by the owners and masterminds behind the Bigfoot Lodge, Saints and Sinners and The Little Cave (1933 Group), Thirsty Crow is a truly great hipster-filled addition. A Bourbon bar through and through from small batch bourbons like Pappy Van Winkle to Hudson and Maker’s Mark, they seem to have it all. Their resident bourbon master, Brandon Ristaino, along with co-owner Bobby Green combine high and low end bourbons to create a truly friendly bar for bourbon aficionados and newbies alike (order the Mint Julep or the Thristy Crow, both $12 ).
Apart from America’s favorite liquor, Green has worked hard to preserve American culture within the architecture and ambiance of Thirsty Crow. From the record playing jukebox in the entry way to the gin barrel behind the bar and the dark wood beamed ceilings, brick walls and the bartenders outfits, this old watering hole truly has a feeling of classic America at its best and most spirited.

Party |

Russell Brand is a bad-ass, no doubt about it. The hip, controversial British comedian, known for his stand-out rock star role in 2008’s “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”, is one of the freshest, funniest voices in stand-up comedy today.
In between planning an extravagant wedding with fiancée Katy Perry and putting the finishing touches on his “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” follow-up “Get Him to the Greek” (co-starring Jonah Hill), Brand has found the time to rock the stage with his blend of unique musings and surreal observations next Monday, May 10, 2010 @ 9PM at the world-famous ACME Comedy Theater. Unfortunately, online tickets are sold-out, but word on the street is a good number of them will be on sale at the door. Check it out.
