3DD: Henry Hargreaves and the Temple of Boobs

On Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

With regards to the feminine form, few attributes have captured the imagination and charmed our senses as much as the female bust, and with good reason. Beyond tapping into humanity’s most basic evolutionary and fertility-driven instincts, a healthy, perky, and robust set of breasts is the perfect aesthetic compliment to the well-cultivated feminine physique. Fortunately for us, the world’s unabashed and vociferous boob-loving constituency, photographer Henry Hargreaves’ 3DD: A 3-D Celebration of Breasts allows breast enthusiasts around the world to appreciate woman’s greatest gift to mankind in its most awesome three-dimensional manifestation, just the way God intended!

Hargreaves’ sacred book features black and white photographs of attractive women (half of which are his friends, the ...

Tarantino’s New Beverly

On Monday, November 22nd, 2010

With the continuing digitization of Hollywood filmmaking and the accessibility of movies in DVD and digital format, revival houses have become more and more important. Without a good revival theatre in the area, the chances of being able to see a classic 35mm print screening are close to zero. Even long-standing theaters like The New Beverly have had trouble in recent years staying afloat. Fortunately for the New Beverly, and for LA residents, there’s Quentin Tarantino.

When the theater was in danger due to dwindling sales, Tarantino charitably stepped in and offered $5,000 a month in order to keep the theater open. That arrangement was working well until 2007, when long-time owner Sherman Torgan died of a ...

thehours

Today marks the US debut of British indie prodigies The Hours, with the release of their first full-length album in the States: It's Not How You Start, It's How You Finish. The band, which has been making bittersweet BritPop since 2004, is not entirely a stranger to US exposure though: the first (and in a way, title) track on the album, "Ali in the Jungle", was featured in a Nike commercial earlier this year.

Fans of The Hours will recognize the tracks on the new album, as it acts as a compilation of the band's greatest hits thus far. The album brings you the power-pop "Big Black Hole", the oddly romantic "Love You More", and other hits. ...

Urban Reflections: Randall Bass’ Surreal Los Angeles Dream

On Tuesday, November 16th, 2010
randall_bass

Specializing in large-scale, digital photo composites, Randall Bass is one of the LA art world’s most promising young stars. Bass, whose foray into the visual arts began with abstract urban landscape photography, now works in a medium, which blends the most innovative aspects of graphic design into his work. The collision between abstracted urban landscapes and modern design principles culminates in architecturally driven compositions, where texture and light emerge as the works’ most prolific themes. By prioritizing light, composition, texture, and depth over context and subject matter,Bass restructures and reinvents urban environments through his sublimely perceptive and surrealist-inspired lens.

Bass favors fragmented urban scenes devoid of people or other ‘staged components’ and counts ...

Movie Buzz: Love and Other Drugs

On Monday, November 15th, 2010
love_and_other_drugs

At first glance, Love and Other Drugs appears to be just another damaged-boy-meets-damaged-girl love story: when pharmaceutical salesman Jamie (Jake Gyllenhaal) meets the free-spirited Maggie (Anne Hathaway) during a life-changing visit to her doctor, the two find aspects of themselves in each other. A heated romance, and lots of sex, ensues.

But the plot is only a small part of why Love and Other Drugs is garnering so much buzz; the real strength of the film lies in the promising cast. The young-but-talented Hathaway and Gyllenhaal, reuniting after appearing together in Brokeback Mountain, are backed by veterans like Oliver Platt and talented comedic actors like Judy Greer and Hank Azaria. Hathaway has come a long way from ...

Carey Mulligan & Keira Knightley at The 54th Times BFI London Film Festival for the opening gala for their film "Never Let Me Go".

The buzz-worthy film is an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's Booker Prize-nominated novel about three boarding school friends (Mulligan, Knightley, & The Social Network's breakout actor Andrew Garfield) who have, unbeknownst to them, been created for the sole purpose of organ donation.

Magnificently rendered by director Mark Romanek ("One Hour Photo"), the film is set in an English dystopia where children are kept under strict supervision and are told that if they ever leave the school grounds, they will be killed by evil forces (thereby, keeping all organ donors within ...

A Distinct Vision

On Wednesday, October 6th, 2010
greg_gorman

Filmmaker John Waters was once quoted as saying, "Greg Gorman is the only person I'd let photograph my corpse.” If you’ve seen Pink Flamingos or the original version of Hairspray, that’s a flattering remark.

In general, everyone has something they’re good at. For Greg Gorman, it’s celebrity portraits and nudes, a niche market that has earned him an exhibition this month at the Pacific Design Center. Titled "A Distinct Vision," more than 190 images, including previously unpublished portraits of male celebs like Leonardo Di Caprio, Johnny Depp, Mark Wahlberg, Jude Law and Tom Cruise, will be on display and are featured in his most recent book, “In Their Youth.”

Chances are that ...
