Moncho1929’s Art Opening at LAB ART

LAB ART, the largest street art gallery in the world recently hosted “Versus”, a solo art exhibition by Moncho1929. For those of you who missed it, the artwork will be on display for the month of November.

Originally born and raised in New York City, Moncho1929 is known for both his iconic animal-inspired street art and pop art style of work. Moncho1929’s phenomenal murals can be found alongside major streets like La Brea, Melrose, and Sunset or throughout parts of town like Echo Park, Hollywood, East LA, and Downtown. Moncho1929 is making his mark as an artist to watch in such a big way, that even NBC has taken notice to it (The Voice commissioned Moncho1929 to paint a mural on set).

Moncho1929’s solo show, “Versus”, encompasses both styles of work are encompassing opposite sides of the room with their styles and themes in juxtaposition.

With a white palette, some works are aggressively socio-political and speak of various issues ranging from war, poaching, and police brutality to the trappings of fame. In the same space, the black palette works speak more of a reaction and internal dialogue with his pop art style. The white writing within the works is meant to reference internal mental dialogue. By positioning the contrasting styles in the same space, the works can be seen as competing, and to an extent having a conversation of sorts. This space brings in the viewer as an observer and participant.  All works are done without a stencil and by hand on canvas and wall (murals).

Guests enjoyed beverages by Popwater and Partida Tequila, light bites by Berri’s Café, and sounds by DJ Kristina Kova. LAB ART Gallery is located at Lab Art Gallery, 217 S. La Brea Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90036. For more information, please follow @moncho1929 on Instagram and shop LAB ART’s collection. The gallery is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday 11 AM to 5 PM.
