Band Spotlight: California’s Terraplane Sun
Venice-based Terraplane Sun are preparing to release their new Friends EP on October 16th. If you haven’t heard of this buzz-band, think feel-good bluegrass meets gritty rock meets soul and little bit of country. And, as for their looks, well think rock-star heartthrobs…
The five-piece recently hit the stage at the Sunset Strip Music Festival and are launching a West Coast tour alongside fellow Angeleno’s The Mowgli’s this week. The new E.P. will be the follow-up to their 2011 album Coyote.
Here’s what the fuss is all about – just listen to the laid-back groove of Get Me Golden:
The band’s style of danceable indie/rock with soul/blues leanings has them poised to make some big-league noise soon, as their July residency at the Satellite did in its own right. Get Me Golden is helping too, being a part of a national Citibank ad campaign and showing up in a few big movies this year (21 Jump Street and What To Expect When You’re Expecting).
Judging by their momentum, it’s only a matter of time before Terraplane Sun go the route of fellow So*Cal acts the Cold War Kids, Dead Sara and Foster the People and become an even bigger deal – so if you’ve been sleeping on them while they’ve been starting fires in nightclubs throughout L.A., let this be your wakeup call.
Along their way, Terraplane Sun have warmed up sold-out gigs for big name bands like the White Buffalo, Alabama Shakes and Nikka Costa, and have had a few residencies at Las Vegas’ flashy new casino The Cosmopolitan.
If you’re down to catch them this weekend, you can hit up the wonderful Malibu Inn on Friday 9/14 (Details here) alongside The Mowgli’s, Tijuana Tears, and the Deltaz, or this Saturday night at the Satellite with the Mowgli’s and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon’s side band The Silverlake Chorus.
