Summer is moving fast and you want to squeeze in one last girl’s getaway that can be accomplished without a plane ticket. Perhaps you’re looking for something to do involving pool parties, wine and/or zebras. We get it! We have answers. Hop in the car and redefine the road trip with these super unique spots.

Hicksville

This Joshua Tree spot is camping via air-conditioned trailers. If novelty gets you going you’ll love the petite salt-water pool with underwater speakers, the free jukebox and the dog fort for pup. Yes you can be indoors but you’re still roughing it, so bring your own food to BBQ, drinks to mix, and don’t forget the toiletries! Be open to whimsy; the on site recording studio is often bustling with action, bunnies are known to run free through the site, and the rooftop Jacuzzi is the perfect spot to wish on all those shooting stars. The entire place can also be rented out for a big group if you’d rather run the show than share a picnic table with your mystery trailer mates from next-door.

Treebones

Sushi might not be the first snack that comes to mind when you’re planning your outdoor adventures but many happy campers have lived to tell their delicious adventures at this Big Sur lodge. The two restaurants boast local and organic cuisine, with a pool, lodge, and bar nearby. Pack a cozy sweater for telescope peering at the shores and choose from furnished tent-like yurts to sleep in or pitch a tent at the normal campground. There is limited wi-fi and phone service so come with good friends and good books, and recalibrate your mind via some much needed mellow time. Make it a long weekend and stay for live music Mondays.

Ace Hotel

Hellooo Palm Springs! There are 180 rooms at this hotel and spa, so like at least that many chances to meet a hottie by one of the two pools, right? They even stay open until 2AM which is perfect for repeat dips on those hot hot nights. DJ’s play on Saturday’s and Sunday’s so feel free to dance with hipsters or hop in a hammock and enjoy the mountain views. The spot has good priced food and is still walking distance to town if you need to step out, but be sure to head back for the twice-monthly Friday band residency in the Amigo Room.

Cypress Inn

Ah, Carmel by-the-sea! This beachfront inn has been around and taking care of guests since 1929. Whil at the inn soak in a giant jet-filled bathtub, enjoy some wild salmon and wine, take tea and a blanket on the patio, or play with some dogs that are welcomed and celebrated there. For entertainment catch the Friday night lounge show, walk to the shops, grab a movie at the outdoor forest theater, or rent some bikes and cruise the beach. If you can hold out until September be sure to watch the Annual Sandcastle Contest. We’re talking serious sand castles.

El Capitan Canyon

Don’t worry, there will be just enough space left in your furnished canvas tent for your s’mores kit at this Santa Barbara “glamping” grounds. (It’s technically in Goleta.) Utilize the free beach cruiser rental, or head for the hills and get your hike on. For meals you can grab food at the deli on site but are also free to cook your own grub near your tent. There won’t be too much cell service, but you’ll have a million pics of wild animals and demonstrations of your fire building skills to instagram on the drive home.

Safari West

Safari West is home to over 400 wild animals, but it’s not a zoo. The brainchild of Peter Lang, the 400-acre wildlife preserve/animal sanctuary is part bed and breakfast and part jeep safari adventure. And it’s closer to home than Africa, located between Santa Rosa and Calistoga north of Napa. Sleep in luxury safari tents & chill out with monkeys, antelopes, cheetahs, zebras, giraffes, zebras, buffalos and more.
