Cat Power Returns With New Album ‘Sun’
On September 4th, mercurial singer/songwriter Cat Power will release a new album called Sun. Her first record of all-original material since 2006’s The Greatest, the album will be released via Matador Records.
If you recall, the singer (real name Chan Marshall) was a no-show at Coachella this past April, after being included on the official lineup – presumably because she didn’t want to suspend recording the new album to make an appearance at the music festival.
Below, listen to Sun’s lead single, the groove-laden Ruin:
According to an interview with The Stool Pigeon, the completion of Sun had a lot to do with her recent breakup with actor Giovanni Ribisi: “I cut my hair off three days [after the break-up], got on a plane to France, and finished the shit,” she said. “It’s all good, you know. I love the person very much. I actually love this record very much, too. I’m very proud of it.”
Much of Sun was recorded in a studio that she built in Malibu. Ruin sounds great, so here’s hoping Sun turns out to be another stellar addition to her already impressive back catalog. Catch Cat Power live at the Hollywood Palladium on November 8th.
