Arrested Development Gets Artsy

On Friday, June 29th, 2012

If you’re a diehard “Arrested Development” fan who misses out on the kinks of the crazy TV family, boy are you in for a treat.

The Bluth family will be in all sorts of shapes and sizes at the art exhibition “There’s Always Money in the Banana Stand” opening at Gallery1988 on Melrose tonight. More than 80 artists are displaying their own artistic spin of the show and its characters, creating everything from paintings to plush dolls to sculptures.

If the photos are any indication, the show will be nothing short of hilarious. In the days after the show announcement, Gallery1988 revealed some pictures of pieces, among them a painting from Aaron Jasinski called “It is All an Illusion,” which features Gob with knife in mouth flanked on either side by his siblings while cards fly in the air, a banana figure drives a Bluth truck and, well, lots of other amazing insanity you’ll have to see in person to truly enjoy.

The humor continues with Michelle Coffee’s plush toys, which show Tobias in all sorts of outfits and even without a shirt. So no matter who you always crushed on –  it’s ok, we won’t judge you- there is sure to be a piece for your heart’s wishes. They’re funny pieces but they’re also carefully rendered, so you get top-notch talent with a healthy dose of Bluth fun.

The show even got a shout-out from Ron Howard who linked to an article after tweeting “Arrested Development Art Shoe… I mean Show.” A surprise appearance in the making? It’s not completely unlikely. Gallery1988 boasts its share of celebrity visits so just make sure to show up early, since you won’t be the only pop culture fiend in attendance.
