Glam Up Your Living Space On The Cheap

On Friday, March 16th, 2012

One thing’s for sure about living space in LA: you either get brand new & small or “vintage” and huge. For most of us, space is most important and we’ll drool over Old Hollywood-esque Spanish architecture over the mundanely modern look any day. But, every now and again that vintage home can get a little well, too vintage. Luckily, modernizing your living space can be easy. Here’s how you can glam up your place on the cheap!

1. Change Wall Colors

The 2 very best spaces to paint: the wall behind your bed & your dining room walls. For whatever reason, this technique glams up your living space instantly & it’s totally affordable. The options are endless – dining rooms can look fabulous in royal blue, deep red, or shades of grey. For bedrooms, our favorite is patterened wallpaper, striped shades of paint, or solid monochrome hues. The very best grey paint is from Restoration Hardware, buy a can for $40. Get royal blue here. Amazing wallpaper can be found at Urban Outfitters & Brocade Home. Peep inspiration here:

2. Details, Details, Details

It’s all about the details! Make your living room, bedroom, & hallways chic with new home accessories: decorative pillows & “chachkes.” Skulls can totally edge up a space, simply place this Metallic Skull piece by Z Gallerie ($30) on a coffee table, nightstand, or book shelf and you’ll score tons of compliments. Other accessory additions that look fab include: these Zigzag Candles ($20) & Whirly Candle Holders ($5). For pillows, try this Gold statement pillow by West Elm ($31), & Frizzle Pillow or Black Diamond Pillowby CB2 ( $20 - $40).  More home accesories can be found at CB2, Z Gallerie, Barney’s, & Urban Outfitters.

3. Update Lighting

The most important thing in setting the right vibe in your home is lighting. Swap out all your old fixtures and swap in brand new, eclectic, modern pieces and it will instantly update your place. Our current favorites include: Crystal Chandelier ($700), Orbit Chandelier ($299), Jupiter Chandelier ($399), Firefly Pendant Lamp ($199), Kathryn Table Lamp ($219), & Hanging Capiz Pendant ($299).

4. Hang New Wall Art

Wall art makes your space unique. Though getting your own masterpieces is totally expensive, here are some great affordable options that can still make your place look stellar. Everyone loves this Ork LA “map” poster ($22) – and if you’re based in another city, you’re in luck because there’s probably one unique to yours. Just get to Aaron’s Brothers and get a ready-made black frame. Or if you’re trying to get a theme going in your office, living room, or dining room – get all of them & throw them up side by side. Other than that – we’re loving these mirrors: Phoenix Mirror ($150) & Perspective Mirror ($150) and these prints from Society 6:  Carpe ($70, framed), Abyss of the Disheartened ($115, framed), & The Dead Chief ($80, framed).

5. Get Organized

It’s hard to get organized with the busy schedule of a minx, but here are some ways to make organization look good. Don’t hide those books – show them off, after all they reflect who you are! We loves these shelves: Expedit Book Shelf ($130, comes in all kinds of colors & sizes), the Conceal Book Shelf ($15), Modular Shelf ($60-$140),  & Format Storage Shelf ($70). Do you own a ton of shoes, bags, & jewelry? The Expedit shelf can keep all your stuff organized + looking great on display, see two ideas for inspiration here:
