Makin’ Us Proud: The Best Angeleno DJs of New Hollywood

On Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

Picture this: you’re at a party. The DJ blows. The crowd is worse. Someone in your group of friends gets the courage to ask the DJ to please, please, play something else. She is met with nothing but attitude and returns to the group, mildly humiliated. We’ve all lived through that (shudder).

However, with these six Angeleno DJs on the “New Hollywood” scene making us proud, the music is always more than fantastic, it’s original. No matter where they play, the vibe is always cool—without the snobbery and pomp of other venues. And with such badass reputations, these DJ’s have such a stellar following that they can transform any party and venue, for that matter, into greatness. Here’s to our favorite 6 Los Angeles home-grown DJ’s for turning everything they touch to gold.

Just as Chris “Kennedy” Masterson was the reason to watch Malcolm in the Middle back in 2006 for his role as rebellious Francis, his DJ skills make for a perfectly legit reason to get your ass off the couch. Masterson is an oxymoron personified; with a popular yet edgy, sweet yet bad-boy flavor, his musical stylings are a lot like him–hip, yet classy, exciting without trying too hard. Wittness Masterson’s excellence Monday nights and head over to La Descarga for ANIMAL, the best dance party you’ve ever been to.

Will Crimes is undoubtedly an A-list DJ, with an air of Clooney-Pitt and the edge of Gosling-Durst. His music coupled with his downright sexy presence has the power to make any chick wanna’ move her hips. Right out of the gate, Crimes has played some of the coolest parties from his beginnings at Sean Patrick’s traveling Temporary Spaces, to the Hollywood Roosevelt’s famed Friday nights at Teddy’s to Tuesday’s Nightswim at The Tropicana Bar, simultaneously carving out time in his busy schedule for a hush-hush celebrity shindig. Under the management of Table Manners, his mixes are punchy, coquettish and street, in a way that establishes he has the touch and the taste.

Nick Foster, otherwise known as DJ Pika, is a true LA-native who has conquered the scene bi-coastally, jetting from LA to NYC on the regular. You may recognize him as “the guy to know,” running the show at Teddy’s Friday’s and Nightswim at The Tropicana Bar. Trendy without seeming trashy, creating music that gets the cool kids dancing, Foster made his mark with his brainchild iSHOWMYSELF, a DJ collaboration with Tommy Sobel and Table Manners’ Will Crimes. They have established themselveves quickly as leaders on both coasts making them the group to have—beg, plead and cajole–at your next event.

Besides being one handsome son-of-a-gun, Devin Lucien has long been part of the brick and mortar of the Los Angeles music scene. He has since expanded his horizons, not only jetting around the country to spread the love, but working on music supervision for major motion pictures and high profile magazines. If you still get to see sir Devin in action (catch him making guest appearances at Hyde 2.0), take a picture with him. It will be worth some serious paper in no time. Oh, and he’s a really nice guy.

Meet Keith Wilson, AKA Keith 2.0.  Dubbing himself “a party planner, not a promoter,” Wilson is known for his 7-year strong Moscow at Boardner’s and Thursday’s Moonlight Swim at Drai’s Hollywood. You may even recognize him from his many modelling stints, watch out ladies, he’s a looker. He mixes everything from rock through the decades of the 50s to the 90s, with funk, soul, disco, electro, and that other stuff that has no name but sounds really neat. He prides himself on his original, authentic taste, avoiding all tunes you might hear on the radio like the bubonic plague. We’re so glad he does, his music is fresh, un-label-able, and vibrant.

Did someone say Skeet? Meet DJ Skeet Skeet (aka Trevor McFedries), a creative, multi-talented DJ, producer, and blogger. Born in Los Angeles and raised in Iowa, this DJ is making his mark worldwide while he’s on tour with none other than Miss Katy Perry on her “California Dreams” tour. Previously landing gigs at O.G. Hyde, Studio B, and every hot Vegas nightclub, Skeet Skeet is known for his fabulous, youthful sounds that truly embody California vibes.
